In the late 1940′s, M. Lynwood Smith began attending the famed Stamps Quartet School of Music in Dallas, TX. A career as a prolific songwriter and publisher was born that would span six decades.

M. Lynwood Smith

During most of that time Bro. Smith published hymnals every two years that were used in churches throughout the United States. He wrote hundreds of great hymns and spiritual songs that became popular and are still widely sung in churches today. Some of his most familiar compositions include “O Lord, Our Lord”, “Before Thy Throne We Come”, “We Believe”, “Some Things I’d Change” and many, many others.

“Some Things I’d Change” was recorded by the famous Hovie Lister and the Statesmen Quartet. He also produced several records by the “Lamplighters”, a small chorus he organized and managed in the 1960′s. Bro. Smith lived nearly all of his life near Brookhaven, MS and traveled the nation as an evangelist. He passed away on October 24, 2007 at the age of 83 years. His last collection of songs “Harbor Lights” was published a few months following his passing.

Legacy Music Publishing was begun in an effort to continue Bro. Smith’s work in the field of publishing shaped-note hymnals suitable for church use. Plans are to continue publishing a new song book every two years, with our first release “Glory Echoes” becoming available in May, 2010.  Legacy also plans to produce music resources to aid in the instruction and promotion of A capella, shaped-note, traditional-style music.
